Recipe: Lime Mayonnaise

Ingredients

1 cup mayonnaise
2 tbs lime juice
3 tbs sour cream (optional)
cooked prawns or lobster, to serve
lime wedges, to serve

Method

Combine mayonnaise with lime juice, sour cream, salt and freshly ground black pepper. Best served with seafood on a platter, lime mayonnaise and lime wedges. Can add Tabasco or sweet chili sauce to taste.

It’s Called TruBlah for a Reason…

I recently went into Borders at Robina and, like the fangirl I am, scooped up 4 bottles of TruBlood. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the blood orange carbonated drink made by and featured in HBO’s True Blood series. Retails at $9.99 per bottle in Australia ($39.95 for a 4 pack carton, which I totally bought on a whim by the way). Of course, it’s an import from the USA so mark-up was shocking.

I’ve wanted a bottle of TruBlood ever since HBO and Alan Ball announced it. Being an Australian, I expected I would have to wait a while — circa 6 months at least. So I’m going to give you a taste review and ask the question – would I buy it again?

Initial thought at first mouthful: Why did I pay $40 for this again?

Ever had a berocca? It’s got a very distinctive metallic taste. Drinking a TruBlood is like drinking a berocca. Metallic. Or maybe that was the red dye on the bottle coming off around the top. It was a lot sweeter than I was expecting and after drinking a little more, I felt like I needed to stop for fear of needing to call my dentist within the next week. I’m kind of at odds with the taste. I want to like it, but I don’t. I do find it grows on you after a while (Quote Sookie: “I’d prefer cancer”) but not to a YES, THAT WAS AWESOME feeling. That feeling was reserved for the latest episode of True Blood (3×04 ’9 Crimes’).

My overall rating: 6/10 (1 being Jessica’s reaction, 10 being Bill’s. Looks like I’m not a “mainstreamer”)

The packaging is awesome and that’s probably what made up 4 points of the above rating. I therefore find myself with a conundrum. I have 3 bottles of TruBlood left that I want to keep for the bottles alone but I don’t really want to drink the stuff inside. I’ve heard vodka works brilliantly with it so maybe I’ll get drunk on TruBlood. Maybe some lemonade would work with it? I think I’d like it more if the sweetness was cut down.

Would I buy it again? Probably only for the bottles (Hello Halloween refreshments!). I actually have a great idea: walking around Surfers Paradise while sipping on one. I’m weird, but the shock factor would be pretty funny. And not in a Lindsay Lohan sort of way. She’s already shocking.

Recipe: Sweet Potato Mash

Ingredients

1kg orange sweet potato, peeled, diced
50g butter, chopped
Sea salt
Balsamic vinegar

Method

Cook sweet potato in a saucepan of boiling water until tender. Drain water from the saucepan.
Return sweet potato to warm saucepan. Shake saucepan over low heat for 30 seconds or until excess moisture evaporates. Remove from heat.
Using a potato masher, roughly mash sweet potato. Gradually add butter. Mash until smooth. Season with sea salt (and pepper if you prefer).
Drizzle with vinegar. Serve.

Recipe: Banana Muffins

Ingredients

2 1/4 cups self-raising flour
3/4 cup caster sugar
125g butter, melted, cooled
3/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
2 large bananas

Method

Preheat oven to 180°C.
Line a 12 x muffin pan with paper cases.
Sift flour into a large bowl. Stir in sugar.
Whisk butter, milk, eggs and vanilla essence together.
Mash up bananas using a fork and add to the liquid mixture.
Add liquid mixture to dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Spoon batter into cases. Bake muffins for 15 – 20 minutes, or until light golden and cooked through.
Stand in pan for 10 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

This recipe makes 12 muffins
It is derived from this recipe which I also recommend. Use caramel easter eggs, jersey caramels or something similar without the bananas if you wanted to try that recipe.
You can make more flavors than just banana – you can leave out the vanilla essence and make apricot, choc chip, chocolate, mocha, blueberry etc.

Apparently you can get plugins for coppermine that actually play FLV’s… how cool is that? So I’ve done some updating to the Wicked Fate Gallery with the videos I also have hosted on Youtube. Don’t get me started on their copyright protection measures.

In other random news… the audio on ‘Vermillion’ has been returned to it on Youtube. After having it gone for almost a year. Weird.

True Blood Madmenified

Did I ever tell you I’m a big True Blood fan? Well, if you don’t know it, you should. Back before Season 3 started, I decided to make a new character every day using the Mad Men Generator until the premiere. Well… there were a few adjustments made to the generator images – like Bill’s Wii remote, different types of clothes and… fangs.

You can find them all in the brand spanking new Wicked Fate Gallery.

Also, I’m thinking of completing the characters now that I’m on holidays. Yay or nay?
